NOMADIC ISLAND - ARTIST IN RESIDENCE CAMP - Call for proposals
The Nomadic Island project is an artist residency project that goes beyond a usual creative residency since it merges with the experience of living in an international community that takes place at the same time. It is an experimentation platform involving an heterogeneous group of artists on one side, and an equally heterogeneous group of local residents on the other side. During a lapse of time of three weeks, the international community-based settlement is intended to create a space to let synergies arise around the theme of alternative ways of living and working.
THEME: Alternative ways of living and working
The Nomadic Island project, calls for reflections on the increasing difficulties our society is facing in its current lifestyle based on overconsumption. Even though part of the society has reached a certain level of consciousness concerning the negative effects our degree of consumption is causing to our environment, there are still many questions open about what can be done and how. If the community artist-in-residence project Nomadic Island is intended to raise questions about our standards of living and their impact on the social and the natural environment we leave in, the existence of this temporary community also wants to raise awareness about possible innovative lifestyles, with low environmental impact, focusing on the prospect of a more sustainable existence from different points of view: social, economical, ecological, and cultural.
CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
The proposals have to relate to the theme in an incontestable manner.
The theme should be approached in a critical way in relation to social, political, philosophical perspectives. The artistic contributions can take any form of expression as long as they question the theme and suggest a non-conform point of view.
The artists will settle themselves with their own sleeping facilities. Their living installation will have to be as self-produced and autonomous as possible. Their self-produced independent accommodation should constitute a part of their artistic concept and should reflect their approach to the theme of alternative ways of living and working. The sleeping facilities may go from a simple tent to a recreational vehicle to a self built-on-place hut or other style of accommodation.
REMUNERATION AND MEALS
Nomadic Island will provide the artists with a remuneration of 2.000,- euro per artistic contribution. Travel expenses to the Nomadic Island location will be refunded up to 200,- euro upon proof of payment. All meals will be provided by the organisation during the whole month of residence.
Application deadline: April 15, 2021
